Hamburg is taking a decisive step to secure its role as Germany’s industrial engine of the future: with the founding of the Industrialized Additive Manufacturing Hub Hamburg (IAMHH e.V.) and the launch of the Fraunhofer Performance Center IAMHH, Additive Manufacturing (AM) is placed at the core of the city’s innovation and sustainability strategy.
For Fehrmann MaterialsX, joining IAMHH e.V. is more than a formal commitment. It is the continuation of our mission: bringing innovation faster into industrial practice. With our expertise in high-performance alloys, powders, and AM qualification, we help create an ecosystem that transforms research into reliable and sustainable industrial solutions.
IAMHH connects politics, academia, and industry in a strong network. Together, members will identify industrial needs, translate research into practice, build regional value chains, and advance sustainability goals through circular-economy solutions. The initiative is backed by substantial support: IAMHH e.V. is funded by the Hamburg Ministry of Economy and Innovation, while the Fraunhofer Performance Center IAMHH will receive one million euros annually starting January 2025.
One of the first pilot projects, AKROPOLYS, aims to establish a circular economy for polymers in Additive Manufacturing. The goal is to recycle polymers multiple times and reuse them for new 3D-printed components – an important step in meeting future EU requirements for recycled content in parts.
The Fraunhofer Performance Center IAMHH bridges the gap between research and industrial application. For Fehrmann MaterialsX, this means strengthening Germany’s role in the production technology transformation 2.0 and making Additive Manufacturing a pillar of resilience and sustainability. We are particularly proud that Mahendran Reddy of Fehrmann MaterialsX will serve on the IAMHH e.V. board as Second Chairman, actively contributing to its strategic direction.
“3D printing stands for speed, sustainability, and resilience. With IAMHH e.V., Hamburg is taking a decisive step forward to expand its leadership nationally and internationally.” — Henning Fehrmann, CEO Fehrmann GmbH and spokesperson of the 3D-Druck Nord network
